2010 International Symposium in Geometry & Topology

International Symposium on Geometry & Topology
in memory of C-C Hsiung
Lehigh University, May 28-30, 2010

Speakers: Werner Ballmann, Bonn University, Germany; Simon Brendle, Stanford University; Kenji Fukaya, Kyoto University, Japan; Michael Hopkins, Harvard University; Alina Marian, University of Illinois at Chicago; D.H. Phong, Columbia University; Y.-T. Siu, Harvard University; Xu-Jia Wang, Australia National University, Australia; S.-T. Yau, Harvard University

This symposium celebrates the life and mathematical legacy of Chuan-Chih Hsiung (1916-2009). C-C (as we knew him) was born in the village of Xuefang in Jiangxi province of China, February 15, 1915. He studied at Zhejiang University, graduating in 1936. He immigrated to the United States in 1945, coming to Michigan State University, where he received his Ph.D. in 1948, the first Ph.D. in mathematics awarded by Michigan State. Before coming to Lehigh University in 1952, he had positions at Wisconsin, Northwestern, and Harvard. Although C-C officially retired in 1984, he remained active mathematically, and within the department, for many years.

In 1967 C-C founded the Journal of Differential Geometry. Although C-C has many publications throughout his life in projective and differential geometry, including 3 books, the creation of the JDG was his proudest accomplishment. The Journal is now the leading mathematical journal in its field. The JDG sponsors an annual international Geometry and Topology conference held at Lehigh and Harvard universities. In 1989, the C.-C. Hsiung Fund for the Advancement of Mathematics was established at Lehigh University in honor of C.-C.

During his tenure at Lehigh University, C-C supervised 20 Ph.D. students.

This conference is supported by the
